Five minutes into singing I heard sniffing from one side of the room. Then. The other side of the room. I had to look, as we normally close our eyes while we are worshipping The Lord. I saw a young boy on one side of the room just sobbing. He was new. I looked over to the other and there was another young man weeping. He’s a regular. In front of me, on his knees face buried in the ground was Mauricio. The anguish in his voice reminded me of men in the Old Testament who would fall on their knees in sack cloth and pour ashes on their head in anguish over their sin or the sins of their people.
Last week, we held Bible study at Mauricio’s house nearby. All but his older brother showed up for this event. Near the end of that meeting, Mauricio’s dad broke down sobbing for his family. Pretty messed up. All of them. What pain five kids can bring to the heart of a previously reserved dad.
This room where we are singing is a room full of addicts, trying to recover. Their sins run deep. Many have messed up their families. There are many regrets. I felt the presence of the Holy Spirit in that room last night. He was moving in the hearts of these men.
We are there to share that there is hope with these young men. There is life abundant in Christ. Yes, we all have sins, some buried, some exposed. But He paid for that already. It’s covered. We are free. My prayer is that every young man in that room not only see their sins, but lay them at the feet of Jesus and become new in Him.
It’s contagious too. The excitement of renewed life in Christ.
It’s an awesome thing to be a part of. I’m so thankful God brought us to these people. That we get to be a part of their story.
