It may be a strange subject coming from me...being that neither I nor any of my kids are adopted. But I have many friends and family members who have adopted. I love the idea of it and am always thrilled when a child is united with their forever family. I think it would be great to have that chance. But at this time, it's just not in God's plan for us. I talked about wanting to do that here in Guatemala, but it's not even available to us. However, we seem to have plenty of opportunities here to love on kids who don't have a great picture of what a real family should be. So we'll keep doing exactly that as God provides us every opportunity. And believe me, there are an endless supply of kids in this village who could use some family loving...many kids with no dads or lousy dads. Some kids with no moms, and some kids whose parents just don't really care.
On an observational note...there's just something awesome about adopted kids. Have you ever noticed how much they start looking like their adoptive family? Even our good friend, Hannah, who was adopted from China is starting to look like her very American-looking parents. Kinda weird, huh? But I think i'ts way cool how God does that. He could just let them be unique in a family. But He seems, from what I have observed, to go out of His way to make an adopted child become part of that family...surpassing genetics. I first observed this when I was a young teen. I had a regular babysitting job for a family whose oldest adopted daughter looked so much like her two younger non-adopted sisters, that you would seriously have to do a DNA test on her to believe otherwise (or just take her parent's word for it).
Anyway, congrats to all you very blessed families out there who've adopted or been adopted! I think its awesome. And if God ever prompts your heart to join the plight for saving an orphan or three, act on it! You so won't regret it.
