Teaching Trooper English…dogs need to know too. |
Do you ever just feel left out? Not fit in? That’s kinda how it has been for Meg. There’s not really anyone her age amongst our two families and she can be a bit bossy…and therefore a bit annoying to some. But that doesn’t really get her down. She has learned to make due. She tends to hang out with our EDBV staff and Trooper. She is also the most fluent in Spanish among our kids. She has no qualms in speaking. No hesitations. No embarrassment if she says it wrong. Besides, she spends more time with those speaking Spanish than the English speakers. When our teenagers are hesitant to dive in to a game with the students in our school, Meg doesn’t hesitate. She is ready when they are. They love her for it too. Kate has the heart, but its accompanied with the fear of messing up.

Our awesome staff: Jose (property manager), Byron (security), Isabela (cook and cleaning) and Julio (security) |
Yesterday, Meg informed me that she has started English lessons with the staff. We snickered a bit, because we know the truth about her own lessons…she rarely does her homework in English, let alone Spanish. But this morning she had out her own notebook and had started writing out words for her new students. She was writing English words phonetically in Spanish so they would pronounce them right. And then writing them in Spanish. She even gave them “homework”. Again, I smiled to myself. I love her initiative and a desire that reflects our own. She says they asked for the lessons…first one, then the others heard and wanted to join in. Again. I smile.

Where she usually is…hanging with the security guard on duty. |
So, though the girl doesn’t much fit in with the gringos, she sure has made friends well with the Guate’s…and Trooper.
